Custom Promotional Sleep Mask for YSL | GWP Case Study

Abstract: Top Jewelry designed and manufactured a series of custom promotional sleep masks for Yves Saint Laurent Beauty, a luxury brand under the L’Oréal Group, for use in its high-end GWP (Gift with Purchase) campaigns and VIP gift programs. This case study details the entire process—from 12 initial design drafts to the delivery of 30,000 finished units—covering fabric selection, hot-stamping process development, environmental compliance, comfort testing, and an efficient 30-day delivery cycle, serving as a reference for buyers seeking experience in serving major beauty brands.

Project Background and Core Requirements

As a leading global luxury beauty brand, YSL maintains exceptionally high standards for the quality and brand identity of its promotional accessories. For this GWP campaign, the client sought to customize a batch of sleep masks to be included as promotional gifts with their skincare sets, as well as to serve as holiday gifts for VIP clients. The client explicitly outlined the following core criteria:

Brand Recognition: The eye mask design must embody YSL’s fashion-forward and elegant DNA; the brand logo must be clear and refined, clearly distinguishing it from mass-market products.

Comfort and Light Blocking: Comfort during extended wear must be ensured, and light blocking must exceed 99% to enhance consumer brand affinity.

Environmental Compliance: All fabrics must be certified under the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and comply with the chemical restrictions outlined in the EU’s REACH regulation.

Cost and Scale: While maintaining a premium feel, the unit price must remain within budget, and the initial order of 30,000 units must be delivered in a single shipment.

Insights

Such stringent requirements for supply chain security and product details are common among top-tier beauty brands. When we previously designed promotional hair accessories for L’Oréal Paris, we followed the same logic: the brand not only focused on the product itself but also placed great importance on the manufacturer’s comprehensive quality control process—from fabric procurement to final product delivery. We understand that for luxury brands, the quality of promotional gifts directly impacts brand image, so no compromises can be made at any stage.

Design and Development Process

Based on the brand visual identity provided by YSL, we were deeply involved in the product development:

  • Concept Development: In line with the brand’s aesthetic, we submitted 12 distinct design proposals featuring various fabric options—including silk, modal, and velvet—and incorporating details such as adjustable elastic bands and built-in earbud pockets.
  • Sample Production Cycle: The client selects three designs for physical prototyping, with the sample production cycle kept within 7–10 days (including fabric procurement and the creation of hot-stamping plates).

Detail Iterations: After three rounds of revisions focused on fabric texture, hot-stamping precision, and light-blocking performance, the final mass-production version is confirmed.

Challenges Encountered During Production

Throughout the three rounds of revisions and iterations, the greatest challenge lay in achieving proper adhesion and a smooth finish for the hot-stamping process on high-end fabrics. YSL specified the use of 22-momme silk fabric with a smooth surface; however, standard hot-stamping techniques often resulted in issues such as flaking gold powder, rough edges, and uneven gloss. The foil-stamped logo on the first prototype sample showed slight peeling after friction testing (dry rub fastness was only Grade 3), and the edges exhibited fraying.
Our solution was to develop a specialized low-temperature, high-pressure hot stamping process tailored to the characteristics of silk fabric. We selected imported eco-friendly hot stamping foil and optimized the ratio of temperature, pressure, and time. Additionally, we pre-treated the fabric to prevent shrinkage prior to stamping, ensuring the stamped design was clear, durable, and had a uniform luster.

Technical Challenges: Achieving a logo adhesion rating of 4.5 and edge precision of 0.2 mm through a low-temperature, high-pressure hot stamping process

To address the technical challenges of hot-stamping the YSL logo onto silk fabric, we optimized both the fabric pretreatment and the hot-stamping process:

  • Fabric Pre-treatment:Selected 22-mme plain crepe silk (100% mulberry silk), weight 95 g/m²
  • Performed two heat-setting treatments prior to cutting (temperature 100°C, duration 15 seconds) to eliminate internal fabric stress and minimize shrinkage and distortion during hot stamping
  • A thin hot-melt interlining (20 g/m²) was applied to the reverse side of the foil-stamping areas to increase local fabric stiffness and ensure uniform stamping pressure

2.Foil-Stamping Process Upgrades:

  • Imported foil from Kurz (Germany), model LUXOR® 562, featuring excellent gloss and high abrasion resistance
  • Hot stamping temperature is controlled at 110°C (20–30°C lower than standard), with a pressure of 4.5 kg/cm² and a duration of 1.2 seconds, to prevent high-temperature damage to silk fibers
  • Hot stamping dies are made of brass, with a pattern depth of 0.5 mm and edge sharpness precision of 0.1 mm
  • A 24-hour curing period is added after hot stamping to ensure the foil layer bonds fully with the fabric

3.Quantifiable Results:

Adhesion Test: Tested using 3M adhesive tape (Standard ASTM D3359), achieving Grade 5B (no peeling whatsoever)

Color fastness: Dry rub fastness Grade 4.5, wet rub fastness Grade 4 (ISO 105-X12), exceeding the client’s required Grade 4 standard

Wash resistance: After 5 cycles of home laundering (40°C, neutral detergent, gentle cycle), the foil-stamped logo showed no peeling or discoloration

Gloss: Tested with a 60° gloss meter, averaging 85 GU; uniform gloss, meeting luxury visual standards

Material Selection and Manufacturing Parameters
To ensure the eye mask’s comfort and durability, we have adopted a high-end industrial-grade manufacturing solution:
      • Outer Layer: 22-mme plain crepe silk (100% mulberry silk), featuring a natural luster and silky-smooth texture that enhances the product’s luxurious feel.
      • Inner Layer: 40-count combed cotton knit fabric (100% cotton), skin-friendly and breathable, preventing irritation to the delicate eye area.
      • Filling Layer: 5mm thin memory foam, density 45kg/m³, providing just the right amount of light-blocking support while maintaining softness.
      • Hot stamping: The iconic YSL Cassandre logo is hot-stamped on the lower left corner of the front of the eye mask, measuring 1.8 × 0.8 cm. It uses imported hot-stamping foil from Kurz, Germany, which features excellent gloss and strong adhesion. The stamping plate has a depth of 0.5 mm and an edge precision of 0.1 mm.
      • Accessories: Adjustable elastic strap (1.5 cm wide, made of smooth, stretchy material), accompanied by a pair of soft silicone earplugs (food-grade silicone, 30 Shore A hardness), housed in a small pouch made of the same fabric (3 × 4 cm).

Packaging: Each eye mask is individually packaged in a custom paper box (dimensions: 12×10×2 cm), lined with white silk and printed with the YSL logo on the exterior.

Industry Know-how

Many buyers tend to overlook the specific fabric requirements for hot stamping. Conventional hot stamping often suffers from poor adhesion on smooth fabrics like silk, causing logos to peel off or fade after just a few uses. We use a low-temperature, high-pressure process combined with imported hot stamping foil to ensure logos remain as good as new even after prolonged use and repeated washing. This 0.2mm stamping precision and 4.5-grade adhesion are what set luxury brands apart from ordinary ones.

Quality Control Standards

In addition to meeting the brand’s visual requirements, we have implemented a series of additional tests specifically for exports to the European market:

  1. Environmental Testing: All fabrics are certified under Oeko-Tex Standard 100, with formaldehyde content < 20 ppm, and azo dyes, heavy metals, and other substances compliant with REACH regulations (see the official EU REACH website).
  2. Physical Performance Testing:
  • Shrinkage Test: AATCC 135 standard; shrinkage rate < 3% after 5 washes.
  • Color Fastness Test: ISO 105-X12; dry rubbing ≥ Grade 4, wet rubbing ≥ Grade 3–4.
  • Hot stamping adhesion: ASTM D3359, Grade 5B
  • Wash resistance: No peeling or discoloration of foil stamping after 5 home washes
  1. Full manual inspection standards:
  • Each eye mask undergoes three inspections: fabric defect inspection (visual inspection under light), foil stamping quality inspection (edge inspection with a 10x magnifying glass), and accessory functionality inspection (stretch and rebound test)
  • Hot stamping standards: Pattern position deviation ≤ 0.5 mm, edge roughness ≤ 0.2 mm, no missing foil, no smudging
  • 10% of each batch is randomly inspected; if the non-conformance rate exceeds 2%, the entire batch is subject to 100% inspection
